NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The No. 4-seeded McCann Tech girls soccer team fell to No. 5 Cathedral, 5-0, Friday afternoon at in the quarter-finals of the Division 4 Western Massachusetts tournament.

McCann came out strong in the beginning of the first half, but Cathedral’s speed up front quickly stole the show.

Eight minutes in, Cathedral’s Rooke Sala sent a shot in from just outside the 18 to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. With 17:32 remaining in the half, Bonavita Julia added one more for Cathedral, putting the score at 2-0 going into the second half.

“We wanted to score early, no matter what, what pressure we had to do, just every touch that we had we wanted to put something towards the net to try and make something happen,” McCann coach Mike Dowling said about going into the second half. “I don’t know if that’s why they scored early because we were all trying to put so much pressure up there or not, but it was important to score the first one.”

Cathedral added three more in the second half; the first coming from Sala, again eight minutes in. Leone Gianna and Haar Brenna added the final two goals of the game leaving the final score at 5-0.

“They didn’t give up, they didn’t quit,” Dowling said. “It was a good season, they were definitely a step up from us, but I’m really proud of the girls.”
