WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Coming into the 2011 season, the Mount Greylock girls' soccer team was a young squad with very little expectations. As the season comes to an end, the Mounties are now a young and impressive team that has far surpassed many of its expectations.

After losing a large, talented senior class from a season ago, Greylock continued its surprising 2011 campaign on Friday with 3-0 home win over Mount Everett. The victory improves the Mounties record to 8-4-2 overall and gives them a spot in the Division 2 Western Mass. tournament. Tom Ostheimer's club is also in first place in the South Division with a record of 5-0-2.

It took a little time for Greylock's offense to get going against the Eagles, but once it was able to break through, the Mounties scored all three of their goals within a 15-minute span in the second half. Junior Alexandra DeVeaux got the hosts on the board in the 50th minute by scoring off an assist from senior Annie Flynn. Ten minutes later, it was Flynn's turn to get into the action when she finished off a pass from freshman defender Lucy Barrett, who collected her first varsity point on the play.

Junior Alex Majetich scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season in the 65th minute, cashing in on a pass from eighth-grader Haley Reinhard.

Junior Margot Besnard made four stops in the Greylock net before giving way to eighth-grader Charlotte Rand, who finished with three saves to ensure the shutout. Everett keeper Sam Hoover had a busy day with 14 saves.

Greylock next plays at Hoosac Valley in a pivotal South Division showdown at 6 p.m. on Monday night. The game will be held at Renfrew Field in Adams.
