Lenox Outlasts Holyoke for Road Win

HOLYOKE, Mass. – Claire Welch scored in the 72nd minute to break a 3-3 tie and send the Lenox girls soccer team on to a 4-3 win over Holyoke on Wednesday.

 

“The game was incredible,” Lenox coach Nicole Gamberoni said. “Back and forth the entire time.”

 

Lenox got the first goal midway through the first half when Cate Welch set up Jane Elliot.

 

But the Knights responded four minutes later to go into half-time tied, 1-1.

 

Holyoke’s Kyra Lippman then scored a pair of goals in the first 13 minutes of the second half to take a 3-1 lead.

 

“We called a time out to regroup,” Gamberoni said. “We told the girls to just go out there and play their game. Take shots when they could and to continue connecting through the midfield.”

 

With 13 minutes left on the clock, Lenox’s Julia Zanin played a corner kick that found Reeva Patel, who one-touched the ball over the keeper’s head to get Lenox within a goal.

 

Three minutes later, Cate Welch scored unassisted to tie it.

 

“With just 8:29 left on the clock, Jane Elliot played a through ball to Claire Welch who buried it into the net,” Gamberoni said. “With a one-goal lead we knew Holyoke was going to come back fast and aggressive and that’s what they did. Our girls contained and did not give up. It was an incredible game.”

 

Lenox (3-3) hosts Monument Mountain on Friday.
