LENOX, Mass. -- Teagan Garwon scored in the 80th minute to give the South Hadley girls soccer team a 1-0 win over Lenox on Thursday.

“This was a tough pill to swallow, to give up the winning goal with only 40 seconds left in the game after seeing the team give everything they had for 79 minutes,” Lenox coach Kyle Zinchuk said. “However, as much as it stings now, there were way more positives for us to take out of this game than negatives. We asked a lot of our defense today, and we were almost able to hold South Hadley off the board, but credit to them for continuing to pressure us and look for that goal.

“Defensively Kristin Parkinson played a tremendous game today for us, and Sophie Patella made several impressive saves to keep us in it, one on a semi-breakaway where she came off her line and made a great kick save barely getting her foot to it to knock it wide. With about five minutes left she made a great second effort save where after deflecting the ball initially, she had to dive backwards toward her goal line and stopped the ball before the ball could completely cross the line.”

Patella finished with 24 saves.

The Millionaires, who were outshot 25-8, had a chance with about 10 minutes left when Sarah Fenton settled a cross and put a shot low to the near post. But Tigers’ keeper Bridget Sears made the save.

South Hadley’s Lindsey Marjanski set up Garwon’s game-winner with a throw-in.

“I was very proud of my girls as we continued to fight for the last 40 seconds and generated an opportunity for Abby Schilling to equalize on a shot from range that missed the top left corner by less than a foot over the crossbar with about 10 seconds left,” Zinchuk said. “Obviously, it would have been nice to hold out for just one more minute, but this is definitely the type of game, against a skilled South Hadley side, that we can really build from moving forward.”

Lenox (4-5-2) hosts Mount Everett on Tuesday.
