WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – After dealing with an injury most of last year, Pittsfield senior Kellie Harrington made a successful return to competition on Wednesday.

Harrington covered the cross country course at Mount Greylock Regional School in 20 minutes, 39.31 seconds to finish well ahead of the field in the Berkshire County League’s season-opening meet.

“I have not run since last October when I stopped running because of my foot injury,” she said. “So this is my first race. Obviously, I’ve been mountain biking all spring and summer.

“I’m getting into running a little bit slower this year just to make sure my feet are OK.”

Harrington looked anything but slow as she pulled away from the field for the individual win.

The fastest teams on the course Wednesday wore the maroon and gold of Lenox Memorial.

Alice Culver was the runner-up on the girls side but led four Millionaires in the top 10 as Lenox’s girls went 5-0 in dual meet competition, including a three-point win over homesteading Mount Greylock.

Lenox’s boys also beat the Mounties on the way to a 5-0 day, and Lenox’s Maxwell Adam and Dennis Love finished 1-2 in the individual standings.

Adam said the race went according to plan.

“It felt really good to go out there and show what I could do,” Adam said. “It’s definitely a tough course. I’ve run this before. I knew it was going to be hard.

“But the plan that I talked about with my coach was just going out hard, separating from the group and seeing where I’m at from there. I felt like that’s what I was able to do today.”

Adam finished in 17:22.74, more than 35 seconds ahead of his teammate Love.

Mount Greylock’s boys lost the showdown with the Millionaires but earned four wins of their own on the day behind  Ezra Holzapfel, who placed third overall.

Mount Greylock’s girls also pulled out four team wins. Ainsley Abel, in third, led a group of four Mounties in the top 10.

The other big winner on the team side Wednesday was the Lee girls, who went 4-0 with Emily Holian leading the way with a 14th place finish, the first among runners not from Lenox, Mount Greylock or Pittsfield.
