DALTON, Mass. – The county’s top track and field stars shone one last time on their home turf Saturday before heading off to the Western Massachusetts and state tournaments over the next couple of weeks.

And the athletes designated by the league’s coaches as its most valuable players showed their worth at the Berkshire County Individuals meet at Wahconah Regional High School.

Girls season MVPs Amelia Desilets (track), Chase Hoey (field) and Katherine Goss (overall) each won a pair of events at the non-scored competition.

On the boys side, overall MVP Payton Shippee won a pair of throws, track MVP Everett Pacheco took the 800-meter and two-mile runs and field MVP Oliver Berkowitz won the long jump and placed second in the triple jump.

“It’s an honor, and I feel very grateful to achieve that,” Shippee said of the league’s top individual honor for the season. “That wasn’t really a goal of mine, but the fact we just got it along the way was a blessing.

“We’ve been working really hard in December, January, cold days, throwing disc in the snow stuff like that. So it’s great to get these type of achievements.”

Goss, who dominated the hurdles this spring for a Mountie team that dominated the dual meet season, said she wasn’t expecting to be picked as the league’s top performer.

“It was very exciting,” Goss said of the moment she learned of the award. “I was a bit shocked because there are a lot of good competitors here – amazing athletes. But I was very happy with it.”

Goss said those other “amazing athletes” helped push her to excel and helped the Mounties prepare to go for their fourth Western Mass team title in six years next Friday at Mohawk Trail Regional.

“[The pressure] pushes us to be better,” she said. “I have some good competitors in hurdles, like [Wahconah’s] Kathryn Perrone and [teammate] Chase Hoey. And them coming up behind me and pushing me gives me a little to fight for.

“And we all come out better for it. Without that competition, I don’t think we would be the team we are. I thank all of them.”

Goss posted wins in the 100 and 400 hurdles and ran legs on Mount Greylock’s winning 4-by-100 and 4-by-400 relays on Saturday. Hoey won the long jump and triple jump.

Monument Mountain’s Desilets won the mile and two mile.

Overall, the nine-time defending league champion Mount Greylock girls took first in 10 of 16 events on Saturday.

The Mount Greylock boys, who have won the last three county championships and last five Western Mass team titles, got just one individual win on Saturday: Owen Petropulos in the mile.

Wahconah’s boys, who lost just one dual meet – by one point, to Mount Greylock – won four events on its new track on Saturday.

Wahconah swept the throws behind Shippee winning the javelin and discus and Julius Kablan in the shot put, and Liam Furlong won the 110 hurdles.

Aside from Shippee, the day’s one double-winner on the boys side was Taconic’s Elijah Harewood, who took the 100 and 200.
