Wahconah Unified Track and Field Team Wins Western Mass

HOLYOKE, Mass. -- Dillan Mara and Brock Prett each won two events Tuesday to help lead the Wahconah Unified Track and Field Team to a Division 1 Western Mass Championship at Holyoke High School.
 
Prett won the long jump in his division with a mark of 7 feet, 8 inches, and the 100 meter dash in 20.14 seconds.
 
Mara won the javelin with a throw of 13-10 and the the 100 in 18.87.
 
Unified sports, which allows teams of special education and regular education students to compete alongside one another, categorizes athletes based on ability, allowing each to compete against an appropriate peer group.
 
This is the first year Wahconah has fielded a team in the program.
 
Wahconah brought home a number of individual medals from the sectional championship.
 
Buddy Clark and Cameryn Catelotti finished 1-2 in their division of the shot put. Clark had a best throw of 9 feet.
 
Maria Gamberoni led the way in her division of the shot (24-0.75).
 
Alisa Mara won her shot put with a throw of 28-8.5.
 
Jovian Higgins continued Wahconah's domination in the shot, winning with a throw of 38-8.
 
In addition to Prett's long jump win, Wahconah got a second-place jump from Hayden Robb (2-8) an a win from John Kowalczyk (15-2).
 
Gabby Trager (41-4), Hannah Robins (38-0) and Noelle Furlong (52-3) each notched a win in the javelin.
 
Catelotti won her division in the 100 (36.89), this time flipping places with Clark, who finished second.
 
Helen Jamrog (29.23) and T Warren (16.26) gave Wahconah two more 100-meter wins.
 
In the 400 meters, Topher Golembeski was a winner with a time of 10:22.74.
 
Wahconah picked up a pair of 800 meter wins from Rachel Figiela (3:53.10) and Arden McKnight (2:46.56).
 
And the squad's 4-by-400 meter relay quartet beat out squads from Auburn and Ludlow to win the title.
