Mount Greylock Volleyball Sweeps Monument Mountain in Opener

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. -- One year after graduating eight seniors, the Mount Greylock volleyball team started the season on the right foot with a 3-0 win over Monument Mountain on Thursday.
 
Senior Gabby Alvarez recorded 23 assists in a 5-1 formation, and captain Lucy Shepard recorded eight kills, nine digs and three aces.
 
Libero Emma Hayward notched 17 digs, and Takeira Darrow had 11 digs, eight kills and six aces.
 
"Monument Mountain kept coming back in every set and had some great offense and strong defense," Mount Greylock coach Greg Geyer said. "It was really great to watch both sides battle through long rallies."
 
The Mounties (1-0) go to Amherst-Pelham on Saturday.
 
Monument Mountain goes to Mount Everett on Wednesday.
