Pittsfield's McCandless Third at All-State Meet

NORWELL, Mass. -- Pittsfield senior Meredith McCandless placed fourth in the javelin on Thursday at the All-State Track and Field Championships at Norwell High School.
 
McCandless, who came into the season-ending meet seeded 13th in a 16-athlete field, threw the javelin 110 feet, 5 inches -- nearly seven feet farther than her seed distance.
 
She finished 15 feet behind All-State champion Hannah McEntee of Taunton, who threw 125-11.
 
The javelin was one of several events contested on Thursday at the meet, which concludes on Saturday.
 
Mount Greylock senior Elizabeth Dupras improved on her seed position by six places in the pentathlon, amassing 2,765 points to finish sixth in the state.
 
Dupras placed third in two of the event's five competitions. She was third in the 800 meters with a time of 2 minutes, 40.16 seconds, and she was third in the high jump, clearing 4-11-1/2.
 
The All-State pentathlon title went to North Reading's Katelyn Gorgenyi, with 3,188 points.
 
Dupras' teammate, Jacqueline Wells, competed in the 800 meters on Thursday, placing 14th with a time of 2:19.88, one and a half seconds off her seed time.
