Mount Greylock's O'Connor, Pittsfield's Wax Advance at Individuals

LONGMEADOW, Mass. -- Mount Greylock's Mai O'Connor and Pittsfield's Makayla Wax are among the players advancing to next week's quarter-finals at the Western Massachusetts Individuals tennis tournament.
 
On Sunday, O'Connor opened the tourney with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Hamden Charter's Lyania Lewis. She then defeated Ludlow's Ashley Keating, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0, to move on to next week.
 
On Saturday, O'Connor will face top-seeded Norah Dumala of Minnechaug for a berth in the semi-finals.
 
Joining her next week will be Pittsfield's Wax, who earned a 6-2, 6-0 win over Mount Greylock's Mia Patrick in the second round on Sunday.
 
The Mounties' third girl in the tournament, Charlotte Holubar, lost to Minnechaug's Ellie Gaudreau, 6-0, 6-0.
 
In the boys tournament, Mount Greylock's Drew Scanlon won his opener over Hampden Charter's Leroy Goldsberry, 6-3, 5-7, 7-5. Scanlon then dropped a 6-0, 6-2 decision to Minnechaug's Kelvin Ohemeng.
 
The Mounties' Oscar Heeringa also won his first round match, beating Amherst's Brock Walman, 6-4, 6-0. Heeringa then lost a close match in the second round, falling to Hampden Charter's John Guzman, 7-6 (8-6), 7-5.
