PITTSFIELD, MASS. – The Mount Greylock girls cross country team Wednesday dominated the 2.5-mile course at Berkshire Community College in a season-opening meet featuring four teams.

Sophomore Adriana Carasone placed first overall in a time of 18 minutes, 6.31 seconds to lead a pack of Mounties who took the top seven places among 46 finishers.

After Wahconah’s Natylee Martin cracked the top 10 by finishing eighth, Mount Greylock locked up the next four spots to take 12 of the top 13 overall.

Mount Greylock’s boys also had a solid opening afternoon with four finishers in the top seven.

Senior Ollie Swabey led the way by crossing the line in 14:21.28, 29 seconds ahead of teammate Andrew Petropulos.

“I love this course,” Swabey said. “Not too many hills except for the big one up the back,” Swabey said. “It was pretty hot out, but it was a fun first race.”

The coaches pushed back the starting time by about an hour for the meet, which featured the boys race first, in order to avoid the worst of the heat.

That boys race featured a better mix of runners in the top positions.

Wahconah’s Noah Wesley and Fritz Sanders placed third and fifth, respectively, as their team put four finishers in the top 10 and earned a pair of dual meet wins, over Taconic and Mount Everett.

Mount Everett’s Ben Vella finished sixth. Taconic’s boys were led by Noah Krantz in ninth place as the Thunder edged Mount Everett by nine points..

Taconic’s girls earned the day’s narrowest win, edging Wahconah by just one point.

Behind a 15th-place finish by Mia Ives, the Thunder grabbed six spots in the top 25, second only to Mount Greylock (16). Wahconah’s top three – Martin, Megan Tucker and Aryanna Bouchard – finished eighth, 14th and 19th, respectively.

Mount Everett’s top girl was Lucia Cicerchia, who placed 32nd.

The Eagles and Wahconah next Wednesday head to Lenox for the Week 2 races. Mount Greylock will return to BCC along with Taconic, Pittsfield and Monument Mountain.

“I’m really excited for the season,” Mount Greylock’s Swabey said. “We have a really strong team. I think we have really high hopes, and it was awesome to see all the new runners here too, just enjoying themselves out there – despite the heat.”
