Mount Greylock's Foley, Carothers Advance at Individuals Tournament
LONGMEADOW, Mass. -- Mount Greylock's Scarlett Foley and Tate Carothers Sunday each advanced to Saturday's semi-finals of the Western Massachusetts individuals tournament.
Foley, the Mounties' No. 1 singles player, defeated Ludlow's Ashlyn Mortimer and Lenox's Caroline Kump in straight sets to advance to the quarter-finals.
In the quartes, she defeated the No. 3 seed, Kamila Shameira of East Longmeadow, 6-3, 6-3.
Her teammate, Mount Greylock No. 2 Charlotte Towler, dropped her first match in the tournament to Northampton's Margaux Galvin, the No. 8 seed, 6-0, 6-3.
In the boys individuals tournament, Mount Greylock's Carothers won two matches in straight sets, dropping just three games, to reach quarter-finals on Saturday.
Mount Greylock's Oscar Heeringa won his opener, 6-0, 6-0, before falling to the tournament's No. 3 seed, Longmeadow's Matt Desrosiers, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3.
The individual tournament continues next weekend at Longmeadow High School.
