NORTHFIELD, Mass. – The Lenox boys and girls cross country teams both took home second place trophies from Saturday’s state meet qualifier at the Northfield Mountain Recreation Center.

“I think just like last year, and this year have kind of shown that this is what good results look like when we have a strong team that runs together,” Lenox senior Cormac Mathews said. “I think something that makes us so special is that we don’t just run for our practice, but we also spend time together outside of that.”

Mathews placed fifth in the Division 3’s C boys race to lead the Millionaires. Setting a course time of 17 minutes, 1.45 seconds with the next Millionaire runner Benjamin Harwood only six seconds behind.

For the Lenox boys team, the Millionaires finished with a total of 95 points behind Parker Charter with a total of 26 points.

Mount Greylock’s boys were third in the 3C field, just four points behind the Millionaires, behind a third-place showing from Oliver Swabey, the top finisher for any Berkshire County individual in Saturday’s six races.

In the Division 3B wave, Monument Mountain’s Everett Pacheco placed fourth to lead the Spartans to a 14th-place showing. Wahconah placed sixth in the 3B race behind Noah Wesley’s 14th-place finish.

In the girls 3C, Alice Culver once again went the distance to bring the Millionaires to the podium with a fourth-place finish and a time of 19 minutes, 45.97 seconds in the Division 3’s C girls' race.

“I was pretty nervous going into it to be honest, this course can be kind of intimidating,” said Culver “But I had a good feeling too, I knew everyone was going to do really well today.”

With Culver placing fourth in the race, along with the rest of the girls team, it led them to finish with a total of 101 points behind Bromfield with 49 points.

This performance for the Lenox’s marks a great comeback of sorts against county rival Mount Greylock. Ending the regular season with an 0-2 record in dual meets against the Mounties, the Millionaires stepped it up with to edge the Mounties in the Western Mass meet at Stanley Park and again on Saturday at the state qualifier.

Mount Greylock finished third on Saturday with Adriana Carasone and Paige Tudor leading the way in 17th and 18th, respectively.

In the 3B race, Monument Mountain’s girls were third and Amelia Desilets placed ninth as an individual, just ahead of 10th-place Yasmine Oubtrou of Pittsfield.

Looking ahead to next week’s state race, Lenox is prepared and feeling confident after the results on Saturday.

“There’s a lot of other strong teams, I mean Parker Charter’s crazy fast, Weston, there’s other teams up there,” Mathews said. “But I’ve been training with these guys all year, some of them multiple years. I think we’ve got what it takes to be up there and be ready.”

Culver shares similar feelings toward next week's event.

“For us, this isn’t even that much less competitive than states will be. So I feel like we kind of got a sense of it today, which is good. So I think now we feel more comfortable and more confident going into next week.” she said.

The MIAA Meet of Champions will be at Willard Field in Devens on Nov. 18.
