Hornets Win on Road in Extra Innings

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Brodie Smith singled with one out in the top of the ninth to drive in the winning run as the McCann Tech baseball team beat Chicopee Comprehensive, 5-4, on Thursday.
 
Hayden Barrett started the winning rally with a leadoff walk and then stole second.
 
After a flyball out, Zach Howland worked a walk to put two runners on for Smith, who hit a line drive to center to drive in Barrett with the winning run.
 
Dylan Turner then retired the Colts in order in the bottom of the ninth, ending the game with a called third strike.
 
After falling behind, 4-1, after three innings, the Hornets scored one in the fourth, one in the sixth and one in the seventh to tie it.
 
Down to its final out in the top of the seventh, McCann Tech got back-to-back singles from Howland and Smith.
 
Lukas Rylander then lifted a fly ball to center field that was misplayed, allowing Howland to score and make it 4-4.
 
Hayden Barrett and Brodie Smith each had three hits. Howland went 2-for-4 with a double in a 10-hit attack for the Hornets.
 
Turner earned the win in relief. He went to the mound with one out in the third and allowed no earned runs the rest of the way, striking out five.
 
McCann Tech (8-6) finishes the regular season at Joe Wolfe Field on Monday against Mount Everett.
