Hornets Win on Road, Earn Rematch with Drury

ATHOL, Mass. – Brodie Smith struck out 10 and allowed just two hits Monday to pitch the 19th-seeded McCann Tech baseball team to a 9-2 win over Athol in the first round of the Division 5 State Tournament.

 

Smith and Lukas Rylander also homered in the win.

 

The Hornets jumped on top with three runs in the top of the first inning, when Brodie Hayden hit a two-run single to right field to drive in Zach Howland and Rylander.

 

Kolton Buck went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI to lead a 12-hit attack for McCann Tech. Smith, Howland and Hayden each had a pair of hits, and Dylan Turner doubled and drove in a run.

 

McCann Tech (10-8) advances to face No. 3 Drury in the Sweet 16 on a date to be announced.
