NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – Don’t measure the McCann Tech boys lacrosse team by the number of games it won.

Measure it by how much the first-year program has improved since March.

“We’re 200 percent better than we were at the start of the year,” McCann coach Paul Lange said after Thursday’s season finale, a 17-3 loss to East Longmeadow. “It’s always tough to have a losing year, but these guys, for the most part, grinned and bore it, worked hard and got better.”

East Longmeadow’s Ricky Holden had a hat trick, and four other Spartans scored two goals apiece.

For the Hornets (1-15), Mike Moreno scored twice, Nick Lincoln scored a goal, and Justin Meczywor had two assists. Jake Tower stopped 11 shots.

Tower, a junior, will be among those players who return to try to move to program forward in 2017.

Four Hornets participated in their last sporting event for the school on Thursday.

“They brought the McCann tradition,” Lange said. “I’m not from McCann, so I don’t know the McCann tradition, and they certainly brought that.

“Nick Lincoln, our longstick middie, was awesome all year. Cory Hartley worked hard in the midfield all year long.  Mike Moreno scored a lot of goals for us. And Nico Romano was the glue.

“[Romano] kept things loose. He worked hard on the field. He was a good example for his teammates.”

Lange hopes the example set by the senior class pays dividends down the road.

“They all brought a lot of hard work, and it showed,” he said. “That’s the way they led – through hard work.”
