WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Brady Auger and Brayden Villnave each scored four goals, and the Mount Greylock boys lacrosse team got off to a strong start with a 19-2 win over McCann Tech on Williams College’s Farley-Lamb Field on Monday.

It was the kind of score that may have had longtime followers of the Mounties reminiscing about the days when they used to have one of the top programs in Western Mass.

It probably is too early for those thoughts, but there is plenty of reason for optimism for a team that went 3-7 last spring after three years without a varsity program.

“It was a good game,” Mounties coach Dan Collins said. “We got going fast, and we wanted to get going fast in the first quarter.

“It makes a huge difference having players coming back for their second year. We have 14 returners. And experience is a big deal at this level. I thought they did really well today. I was very proud of them.”

Auger and Tanner Haig-Taylor each had two goals and two assists in the Mounties’ fast start as the hosts jumped out to a 10-1 lead.

Haig-Taylor went on to have a three-goal, four-assist day. Reed Olney and Luke Irwin each also had a hat trick for the Mounties.

Dallas Ritcher provided both goals for McCann Tech, but that was all the offense allowed by Mount Greylock keeper Oden Wojtkowski (six saves).

Mount Greylock’s offense, meanwhile, rolled up 15 goals before half-time, ensuring that the second half would be played under running time.

As happy as Collins was with the results, he said there are things the Mounties can work on.

“We can continue to work on our offense – making it smoother and so forth,” he said. “We had a lot of one-on-one opportunities today. We’re trying to develop a movement offense. And we will. That will get sharper as time goes on.”

Mount Greylock (1-0) is scheduled to play Lenox on the Cold Spring Road campus on Wednesday afternoon.

McCann Tech (0-2) has a rematch at Hoosac Valley on Monday.
