WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Alie Mendel scored six goals, and the Hoosac Valley girls lacrosse team earned a 19-2 win over St. Mary’s to qualify for the Western Massachusetts tournament for the first time in the program’s history.

“I'm very proud of the girls for working hard this season to reach their goal of making the tournament,” Hoosac Valley coach Molly Meczywor said. “Last year we were one game away, so they had their minds set on qualifying this year. It's been five years of hard work and commitment to get to this point.”

Claudia Bressett scored five goals and set up two more, and Aubrey Rumbolt had a goal and three assists for the Hurricanes, who got three saves from Abi Disbrow.

Hoosac Valley (7-5) hosts Pittsfield on Tuesday.
