CHESHIRE, Mass. – A slow start cost the Hoosac Valley girls lacrosse team in an 18-13 loss to Amherst-Pelham on Friday.

Emily Ireland scored six goals for Amherst in a battle of the Hurricanes as the Hoosac Valley took its first loss of the season.

“We weren't out best in the first half, but played really well in the second half,” Hoosac Valley coach Molly Mecyzwor said. “I was very proud of how we responded. Kennedy Whitely had a fantastic game in the net. At half and after the game, we identified what we need to improve on. Great group of girls.”

Whitely made 12 saves in the loss.

Hoosac Valley got five goals from Emma Meczywor and three apiece from Lauren Davis and Karyssa Charon.

Hoosac (6-1) hosts Springfield Central on Wednesday.
