Hornets Sweep Lee
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – Shaylee Lawson went 5-for-5 with three triples and four RBIs Tuesday to lead the McCann Tech softball team in a double-header sweep of Lee at Disanti Field.
Aiden Champney was 5-for-7 with a double, and Gabby Driscoll was 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles on a day when the Hornets pounded out 44 hits in a pair of five-inning wins by scores of 18-0 and 20-1.
Emma LeMire and Avery Lane each earned a complete-game win in the circle.
In Game 1, LeMire struck out nine and allowed one hit in a shutout win. Lane struck out 10 in the Game 2 victory.
The Hornets started the day with a six-run first inning and never slowed down in improving to 8-0 and scored in double digits for the seventh and eighth times this spring.
The Wildcats (1-6), meanwhile, have allowed double-digit runs in every game this year, including their victory, a 25-22 win over Gateway Regional.
It has been a different kind of year for Lee, which is in its first year after the graduation of ace pitcher Brianna Lynch, who has 16 appearances this spring at Fitchburg State.
“Without a doubt, it’s definitely a rebuild,” Lee coach Scott Sibley said. “We lost six seniors, and then three other girls didn’t come back. … We’re a very young team. We have one junior and everybody else is freshmen, a couple of sophomores and below that in middle school still.
“So it’s definitely a rebuilding year, but there were positives even today.”
As the “home” team in the second game, which was the rescheduled version of a game that was supposed to be played in lee in March, the Wildcats rallied for their only run of the day in the bottom of the fifth.
Kayla Clark reached on an infield single with one out and took second on a groundout. Then Kassidy Clark singled to put runners at the corners before Maddie Blair hit a line drive to right to bring Kayla Clark home.
Lane then ended the day and stranded a pair of runners with her 10th strikeout of the game, allowing the Hornets to enjoy the rest of their vacation week before they return to action on Tuesday at home against Mohawk Trail.
Lee continues a busy week with a roster depleted by vacation absences on Thursday when it hosts Monument Mountain.
Sibley said that the Wildcats are maintaining a good attitude despite their lack of success on the scoreboard.
“They were playing with enthusiasm, and I just told them, ‘[McCann Tech] is a team that’s got six seniors,’ “ he said. “If [the Wildcats] stick together a couple of years, they’re going to be that team right there.
“They know we’re going to take some lumps this year, but they’re good kids. They’re willing to work hard and put the effort and energy into things.”
