Both this week’s iBerkshires.com/Bedard Bros. Athletes of the Week have their high school basketball teams unbeaten in the new year.

One of them has not lost a game since last season.

Faith Brazeau scored a team-high 13 points on Thursday as the McCann Tech girls improved to 5-0 this season with a 39-16 win over Gateway Regional.

Brazeau improved her scoring average to 7.6 points per game – modest by some standards but significant on a McCann Tech team that is allowing opponents an average of just 15.2 points per game.

Brazeau is second on the Hornets in scoring behind classmate Aiden Champney (8.2 ppg).

McCann Tech coach Justin Kratz has talked about how the two seniors have helped anchor the stingy Hornets’ defense.

“Aiden Champney and Faith Brazeau really set the tone defensively with their energy which other girls fed off and tried to match which made the defense really click,” Kratz said after a recent win.

McCann Tech will look to stay unbeaten on Monday when it completes the season series against Hampden Charter. It will be home again on Wednesday against Mohawk Trail.

McCann Tech’s boys will be on the road Monday against Lee, a team that boasts a three-game winning streak and a 4-4 record.

Senior Joey Abderhalden has played a major role in the Wildcats’ success, averaging more than 20 points and more than two 3-pointers per game.

He started last week with 20 points and 11 rebounds in a three-point road win at Mount Greylock and finished it with 17 points in Friday’s home win over Pioneer Valley Christian.

Abderhalden and the Wildcats have a busy week ahead. After Monday’s non-league game against McCann Tech, they host Bi-County West foes Veritas Prep Charter on Tuesday and Libertas Charter on Friday.
