WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Liam Wheeler knocked down the game’s only 3-pointer with about 10 seconds left Wednesday to erase a three-point deficit and send the Wahconah Unified Basketball team to a 49-49 tie at Mount Greylock.

It was the most appropriate ending to a back-and-forth game in which neither team led by more than eight points.

Wheeler finished with a game-high 19 points, and Devika Sharma scored 17 to lead the Mounties in their season debut.

Mount Greylock rallied from an eight-point deficit in the second half to take the lead in the closing minutes before Wheeler’s triple.

Early on, the Mounties jumped out to a six-point lead midway through the first half when Landon Filiault (12 points) scored in transition with an assist from J.T. Symanski to make it 16-10.

Wahconah answered with an 8-4 run capped when Derrick Croshier (eight points) pulled down a defensive rebound at one end and scored at the other end to make it 20-18.

Wahconah closed the half on a 10-2 run that featured a pair of baskets from Jason Daly (10 points) to lead, 32-24, at half-time.

It was 38-30 in the second half after a basket by Wahconah’s Sam Iovieno (12 points).

But Mount Greylock rallied with an 11-2 spurt that included back-to-back baskets from Sharma and Josue Rubio to take the lead on a Filiault putback to make it 41-40 with 8 minutes left.

From there, both defenses dug in. But Jameson Rogers (eight points) scored to give Mount Greylock a 43-42 lead with about five minutes left, and the Mounties stayed ahead until Wheeler knotted the score from downtown.

Mount Greylock was not able to get a quality look at the basket as the remaining seconds ran off, and both teams had to settle for a stalemate.
