SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. — Sophie Gatzounas scored 23 points to lead the South Hadley girls basketball team to a 62-48 win over Drury on Monday night.

South Hadley broke the game open with a 22-point second quarter to take a 33-20 lead into half-time.

First-year Drury coach Brian Flagg was impressed by what he saw from Gatzounas.

“Sophie is a tremendous player and only a junior,” Flagg said. “She will make some noise in D3 again this year.

“Our girls played well. Our goal was to try and contain [Gatzounas] and we did for three quarters thanks to Sarah Lamarre. She had five points through three. What an effort by our kids. South Hadley had other kids step up and get it done.

“We feel good about where we are and will get better game by game.”

Molly Moulton scored a team-high 15 for Drury, which also got nine points from Olivia Carlson.

The Blue Devils (0-1) are home to face Mount Everett on Wednedsay.
