Balanced Attack Carries McCann Past Sci-TechNORTH ADAMS, Mass — The defense has been there all season long for the McCann Tech girls' basketball team. Now, it looks likes the Hornets' offense is finally joining the party as well.
McCann put eight different players into the scoring column, including two in double figures, on its way to scoring a season high in points in a 56-43 home win over Sci-Tech on Tuesday night. After leading by just two points at the end of the first quarter, the Hornets took control of the game by outscoring the CyberCats 17-8 in the second frame. Sci-Tech never made a run in the second half, allowing McCann (6-10, 5-2) to keep its postseason hopes alive with a big Bi-County West League win.
In order to qualify for the Division 3 Western Mass. tournament, Kristen Lewis' club now needs to win its final league game against Southwick on Friday night in order to finish in second place in their division.
"We had to win tonight in order to go to the tournament," Lewis said. "We still have to win on Friday, but we are one step closer. We played very well. All of the girls came together, played as a team and left everything they had on the floor. We come back out on Thursday for our last home game against Mount Everett and then we have to win on Friday against Southwick. We are looking forward to a tight battle and a very intense matchup with them."
Brandi Bass hit five 3-pointers on her way to scoring a game-high 25 points but, unfortunately for the CyberCats (3-14), no other player posted more than six points on the night. The Hornets had a much more balanced attack, meanwhile, led by senior guard Ashley Alibozek, who finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Senior forward Cassie Field added 11 points, 11 boards and three assists, while junior guard Mary Nguyen had a very unique but more so impressive stat line of nine points, nine rebounds, nine steals and nine assists.
McCann welcomes Mount Everett for its final home game at 7 p.m. on Thursday night. The Hornets then travel to Southwick for a 7:30 p.m. game on Friday.
