NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – The McCann Tech girls basketball team Thursday played exceptional defense and displayed exceptional sportsmanship in a 36-25 win over Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter.

The Hornets held the Dragons to 13 points through three quarters, building an 18-point lead.

“The last couple minutes of the game I had our captain Aidan Champney in the game to help stabilize things with some of our younger players and unfortunately PVCICS ran out of eligible players due to fouls,” McCann Tech coach Justin Kratz said. “While shooting the resulting free throw Aiden asked if she could come out of the game to even up the numbers because she, ‘didn't want to play in a game that wasn't fair,’ which is typical of the leadership and sportsmanship she shows on a nightly basis.

“Super proud of the competitor and person she is  for asking that out of respect for her opponent and the game. I talk to the seniors each year about the goal of improving the program for future teams and setting an example for the younger girls about how we conduct ourselves as a team, in our play and in our attitude, and this is an absolute first class example of a senior working towards that goal.”

Champney led McCann Tech with 12 points. Gabriella Lefevre scored six, and Faith Brazeau added five in the low-scoring affair.

The Hornets (11-1) host St. Mary’s of Westfield on Monday.
