A couple of high school sophomores had super holiday weeks for their respective teams and earned iBerkshires.com/Southwestern Vermont Health Care Athlete of the Week honors.

Wahconah's Madison McCarthy leads her team in scoring with 11.5 points per game and  has helped the squad to a 3-1 start to the season.

McCarthy's biggest points of the season so far came on Thursday night, when she came off an Emma Jacinto screen, took an inbound pass from Gracey Farley and knocked down a 3-point shot with hands in her face with 2.4 seconds left in overtime to give Wahconah a 47-46 win at Drury.

McCarthy finished with a game-high 20 points in Wahconah's second straight win. She had eight points in the fourth quarter, helping her team overcome a six-point deficit to force OT.

Wahconah is home twice this week, against Mount Greylock on Wednesday and South Hadley on Friday.

Hoosac Valley sophomore Jayquan Vazquez is making a name for himself in Berkshire County high school sports this year.

He was a dominant defensive lineman in the fall for a Hurricane football team that went 10-1 with a trip to the Division 8 state semi-finals.

This winter, competing for the co-operative team at Mount Greylock, Vazquez captured a 190-pound championship at the Berkshire Holiday Tournament at Monument Mountain on Wednesday.

Vazquez won three of his matches with pins, including a 47-second fall in the championship bout.

His other win at Monument Mountain came be default in the first period with Vazquez ahead, 5-2, against Athol's Sawyer Lefsyk. That victory avenged Vazquez' only tournament loss so far this year, a 12-4 win by Lefsyk at Athol's Bears Invitational, where Vazquez fought through the consolation bracket to place third.

Mount Greylock is home for a dual match on Wednesday against Mount Everett.

The iBerkshires.com Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Southwestern Vermont Health Care.
