WORCESTER, Mass. -- Berkshire County was well represented last weekend when the Massachusetts Basketball Coaches Association handed out its postseason awards for the 2025-26 high school season.

Wahconah senior Madison McCarthy was named the girls Division 4 Player of the Year at a banquet honoring student-athletes from throughout the commonwealth.

In boys basketball, the MBCA recognized four individuals including two more from Wahconah and two from Hoosac Valley's State Championship squad.

Adan Wicks and Qwanell Bradley were named to the boys Division 5 All-State team. Wahconah's Cooper Calvert made the team in Division 4, and his teammate Sam McLaughlin was recognized on the all-State Academic Team.

This week, McCarthy was quick to highlight all who helped her achieve the award.

"I think it was awesome that it shows all the hard work I put in, not only in the season but in the off season as well," she said after playing a varsity softball game for Wahconah. "My parents totally helped me get there. The trainers helped me get there.

"I think it's not only for me an awesome accomplishment but for everybody around me who helps me."

As an individual, McCarthy scored more than 1,000 points in her high school career and led her team in points and 3-pointers the last three seasons.

This fall, she plans to attend North Adams' Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, where she plans to continue playing basketball.

"I just love my community," McCarthy said of the decision to stay local. "I love being around here. I don't want to leave my mom and dad, to be completely honest.

"I'm excited to start my new chapter. I'm excited to make new friends. I'm excited to start a whole new career."
