Music discovery class at the Berkshire Music School

Berkshire Music School will run Music Discovery from August 9th to August 20th. The program is designed for children ages between 6 and 10 years old. The classes will take place on weekdays from 9 am to noon and will be held at the Music School’s Edgar B. Taft Recital Hall. Students will learn and play instruments including recorders, and recorders will be given to each student to keep. Instrument groups will be demonstrated, and children will discover new sounds with movements from around the world. On Friday, August 13th, students and their parents are invited to attend closed rehearsal at Tanglewood. The class will be taught by BMS faculty members Sharon Powers and Barbara Dewan. Snacks will be provided. Tuition is $250, 1 week option for the week of August 9th is available for $125. Sharon Powers has been on the BMS faculty since 1998, as instructor of flute and flute ensembles. Ms. Powers has served as flute instructor and orchestra director at schools in Columbia and Berkshire counties since 1997. Prior to that, she taught at the International School of Paris, France, The French School of Bangkok, Corlears School, NYC, amongst others. Ms. Powers received her Bachelor of Music degree from Bennington College, and did graduate studies in flute and composition at Julliard and Manhattan Schools of Music. Barbara Dewan has taught at BMS since 2001. She has taught music in schools in New York, Massachusetts, and New Delhi, India, and has been an organist, choir director and private piano teacher for over 20 years. Ms. Dewan holds a B.S. degree in Music Education from the Crane School of Music of SUNY Potsdam. She also holds a permanent Massachusetts teaching certificate. Lanesborough Fifth-Graders Win Snowplow Name Contest

LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — One of the snowplows for Highway District 1 has a new name: "The Blizzard Boss."
 
The name comes from teacher Gina Wagner's fifth-grade class at Lanesborough Elementary School. 
 
The state Department of Transportation announced the winners of the fourth annual "Name A Snowplow" contest on Monday. 
 
The department received entries from public elementary and middle school classrooms across the commonwealth to name the 12 MassDOT snowplows that will be in service during the 2025/2026 winter season. 
 
The purpose of the contest is to celebrate the snow and ice season and to recognize the hard work and dedication shown by public works employees and contractors during winter operations. 
 
"Thank you to all of the students who participated. Your creativity allows us to highlight to all, the importance of the work performed by our workforce," said  interim MassDOT Secretary Phil Eng.  
 
"Our workforce takes pride as they clear snow and ice, keeping our roads safe during adverse weather events for all that need to travel. ?To our contest winners and participants, know that you have added some fun to the serious take of operating plows. ?I'm proud of the skill and dedication from our crews and thank the public of the shared responsibility to slow down, give plows space and put safety first every time there is a winter weather event."
