Troy, N.Y. — It’s not often that the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall plays host to a national treasure, but on Saturday, February 26 at 8 p.m., Israel’s most accomplished singer --Chava Alberstein-- brings her extraordinary music to the Capital Region. In the intimate setting of the Music Hall, Chava Alberstein takes her audience along on her continuing spiritual journey. Although she speaks for her own culture and traditions, she sees herself as much a singer of the world as a singer of her beloved Israel. Her folk songs are about love and loss, peace and oppression, poverty and solitude while also celebrating the beauty of the human form. Since her career began in the late 1960s, Ms. Alberstein has released nearly 50 recordings, many of which are now gold or platinum. Her most recent release, “The Well”, is an album of Yiddish poems she has transformed into folk songs with the renowned klezmer group, the Klezmatics. Ms. Alberstein was born in Poland and grew up speaking Yiddish. Although she moved to Israel at the age of four, she’s never totally lost the feeling of being a stranger. “No matter where I am, even it it’s in my own country, I feel like a bit of a guest,” she said. “People can appreciate this today, because they move around so much. Every country you go to in the world is filled with so-called foreigners.” The majority of her albums are sung in Hebrew, but she has also released six albums in Yiddish. Israel’s largest daily newspaper has named her “the most important female musician in Israel’ s history.” In addition to her recordings, Ms. Alberstein has developed a film “Too Early to Be Quiet, Too Late to Sing” in which she highlights the last living Yiddish poets and expresses her endless love of poetry and Yiddish. This film strives to capture what’s left of the flourishing Yiddish culture of poetry, music, drama and literature that was lost in the Holocaust. The Music Hall Box Office opens one hour prior to the performance. Otherwise, Box Office operations are handled at its business office at 7 State Street, Monday through Friday 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., on show days only. With hundreds of curated gently used books to choose from—fiction, nonfiction, children's favorites, gift-quality selections, cookbooks, and more—it's the perfect local stop for holiday gifting.
 
This year's sale is an addition to the Southern Berkshire Chamber of Commerce's Holiday Stroll on this Saturday, Dec. 13, 3–8 PM. Visitors can swing by the Mason Library for early parking, browse the sale until 3:00 PM, then meet Pete the Cat on the front lawn before heading downtown for the Stroll's shopping, music, and festive eats.
 
Can't make the Holiday Stroll? The book sale is open during regular Mason Library hours throughout December.
 
Proceeds support free library programming and events for all ages.
