Arturo Sandoval
Troy, NY - The London Evening Star said it best: “Arturo Sandoval is the sort of virtuoso artist who comes along only once or twice in a generation.” Winner of numerous Grammys and Billboard Awards, this master of the jazz trumpet, flugel horn, and piano takes the stage at Troy Savings Bank Music Hall on Saturday, April 2nd at 8 p.m. with opening act Alex Torres y Los Reyes Latinos for a display of the passion and genius that has established him as one of the world’s foremost jazz musicians. A native of Artemisa, Cuba, Sandoval has performed around the globe for decades, weaving far-flung musical influences into his frenetic Afro-Cuban jazz to create a sound that is unmistakably his. From his early days as a young protégé of Dizzy Gillespie—his strongest influence and frequent collaborator—Sandoval has developed into a world-class musician equally gifted in classical, rock, and bebop. Sandoval was a founding member of Cuban supergroup Irakere, which was formed in 1973 with former members of Cuba’s Orquestra Cubana de Musica Moderna including legendary pianist Chucho Valdes and saxophonist Paquito D’Rivera. He is a hugely sought-after collaborator, having performed or recorded with a veritable who’s who of the recording industry’s biggest stars, including Gillespie, Frank Sinatra, Justin Timberlake, Alicia Keys, Celine Dion, Paul Anka, Rod Stewart, Tony Bennett, Patti LaBelle, and John Williams and the London Symphony Orchestra, among others. “Mr. Sandoval’s playing is unabashedly spectacular, yet he uses his technique with dramatic finesse,” wrote the New York Times. Since beginning his studies in classical trumpet at the tender age of twelve, Arturo Sandoval has developed a performance style that is unparalleled in its intensity, energy, and vivacity. He has been showered with awards, earning 4 Grammys, 6 Billboard Music Awards, and an Emmy for his composition of the entire score of the 2000 HBO movie based on his life, “For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story,” starring Andy Garcia and Gloria Estefan. Not only is he is a tenured professor at Florida International University, he also maintains one of the most extensive music education systems available, constantly working with the NARAS educational program and producing CD’s of original exercises for Hal Leonard Publishing. An artist at the top of his game, Sandoval’s performance at the Hall promises to showcase the talents of this living legend perfectly. Opening up the show for Sandoval are perennial local favorites Alex Torres y Los Reyes Latinos, featuring new lead vocalist Sammy Negron. A prominent fixture on New York’s Latin music scene, the 12-member group is proficient in all Latin musical dialects, from zesty boleros to heart-pounding bombas and plenas. The group has performed for President Bill Clinton and Hilary Clinton at the NYS Democratic Convention, played at Governor George Pataki’s inauguration, and have shared the stage with such greats as Eddie Palmieri, Tito Nieves, and the late legend Tito Puente. They have been the recipients of the New England Cultural Arts Preservation Award, the NYS Governor’s Excellence in Arts Award, and have placed on Metroland’s “Best Of” list for seven consecutive years.
