Boy Scout Troop 38 annual weeklong campout at Camp Holy Cross in Goshen

ADAMS, Mass. – Boy Scout Troop 38 annual weeklong campout culminated in its Court of Honor and Fellowship Dinner at Camp Holy Cross in Goshen on Thursday, Aug. 20.

Over 100 parents, family and friends observed the presentation of the following awards for their offspring’s achievements in rank:

Scout: G. Bartlett, J. Bartlett, D. Durant, A. Ellis, A. Macksey, and N. Sebastino

Tenderfoot: A. Ellis, A. Macksey, D. Durant, N. Sebastino, G. Bartlett, J. Bartlett.

1st Class: T. Jones,  T.J. Winch

Star:  F. Charron, D. Jopich, N. Bergeron, B. Clish

The highlight of the Court of Honor was the presentation of the Eagle Award to Ryan Alvarez, son of Susan Alvarez of Myrtle St., Adams. The scouts received the following Merit Badges which they must earn in order to advance in their rank:

On the first day of their week, the scouts participated in an Olympic competition which included target shooting, canoe/kayak races, knot tying, archery, and a number of competitive games. 

The second day they participated in a Fishing Derby at the DAR State Forest in Goshen. The remaining week their activities included merit badge passing, a class on life saving presented by members of the Adams Ambulance Service, a daily 7 AM swim & calisthenics, more canoeing/kayaking, rock climbing, crafts, outdoor cooking, and tubing.

The meals for the week were prepared by the Troop cooks of over 40 years, Ralph Schwarzer and Tom Keller. They were assisted by Randy Macksey as well as several of the assistant leaders.

Adams Parts Ways With Police Chief

ADAMS, Mass. — The town has parted ways with its police chief. 
 
K. Scott Kelley "is no longer employed by the Town of Adams," according to interim Town Administrator Holli Jayko. 
 
The Board of Selectmen voted on Sept. 8 to put the police chief on a paid leave of absence but town officials have declined to answer repeated questions about the nature of the absence other than to clarify it was not a "suspension."
 
His departure follows an executive session held by the Selectmen last Wednesday to discuss a personnel matter other than professional competence, including health or discipline, or dismissal. 
 
A request for further information on whether Kelley's leaving was through resignation or termination was not provided, or whether his contract had been paid out. 
 
"The Town does not comment on personnel matters and will have no further comment on this matter at this time," responded Selectmen Chair John Duval via email on Friday. 
 
Kelley, who moved here to take the post of chief in 2021, has reportedly sold his home.
