Pittsfield Fire Graduates Nine From Training Academy
PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Nine new firefighters joined the department after graduating from the department's six-week academy.
On Friday, the new firefighters were joined by friends, family, and city officials for a graduation ceremony at Reid Middle School.
The ceremony featured an invocation from the Rev. Peter Gregory, introductory remarks from retired Deputy Chief Michael Polidoro, commentary from Training Capt. Neil Myers, the awarding of certificates from Deputy Chief Mark Cancilla, and closing remarks from Deputy Chief Daniel Garner.
The 2017 recruitment class are Brandon Bailey, Kyle Bailey, Craig Eggleston, Mike Herman, Shawn Leary, Steve Papa, Timothy Sayers, Brendan Shank, and Nick Teti.
Myers said there were some 80 people in attendance including City Council President Peter Marchetti, and Councilors Peter White and Anthony Simonelli. The new firefighters received certificates and were pinned by their families.
The new firefighters were brought onto the department through a Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response grant to the tune of $1,112,864. The grant pays for the salaries and benefits for what is the largest recruiting class in a long time. Once the grant expires, the firefighters will fill vacancies being created through retirements in the coming years.

Housing Secretary Edward Augustus cuts the ribbon at The First on Thursday with housing officials and Mayor Peter Marchetti, state Sen. Paul Mark and state Rep. Tricia Farley-Bouvier.
PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The holidays are here and several community members are celebrating it with the opening of two affordable housing initiatives.
"This is a day to celebrate," Hearthway CEO Eileen Peltier said during the ribbon-cutting on Thursday.
The celebration was for nearly 40 supportive permanent housing units; nine at "The First" located within the Zion Lutheran Church, and 28 on West Housatonic Street. A ceremony was held in the new Housing Resource Center on First Street, which was funded by the American Rescue Plan Act.
The apartments will be leased out by Hearthway, with ServiceNet as a partner.
The First Street location has nine studio apartments that are about 300 square feet and has a large community center. The West Housatonic Street location will have 28 studio units that range between 300 to 350 square feet. All units can be adapted to be ADA accessible.
The West Housatonic location is still under construction with the hope to have it completed by the middle of January, said Chris Wilett, Hearthway development associate.
Brown hopes to one day work in a lab, feeding their strong interest in scientific research and making a positive difference in the world.
