College Notes: July & August 2018
Tiffany-Rae Robinson
SOAR helps set the stage for academic readiness and successful community integration to Western New England University and leaders help new students transition by providing entering students and parents with information and structure for effective adjustment to the university environment.
OGLs are students who have consistently modeled solid citizenship and active participation in the Western New England Community. They are selected for their strong communication skills, their leadership qualities, and their ability to build relationships with students and families.
Robinson is working toward a degree in biomedical engineering.
Castleton (Vt.) College welcomes the following students who have registered for the fall 2018 semester: Skylar Render, Taverick Roberson and Isiah Williams, all of Pittsfield; Christopher Santella of Cheshire; and Dylan Toomey of North Adams.
Graduations
The following local residents were among the 1,127 students who received their degrees in May as part of the class of 2018 at Roger Williams University in Bristol, R.I.: Alyssa Bush, cum laude, bachelor of science biology and Alicia Johnson, summa cum laude with a bachelor of art in psychology, both of Adams; and Alison Cellana, magna cum laude, bachelor of art in graphic design communications and Jenna Markland, magna cum laude bachelor of art in psychology, both of North Adams.
Emily Kaegi of Williamstown graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of arts in mathematics/statistics from Carleton College in Northfield, Minn., at its 144th commencement exercises, held on Saturday, June 9, 2018. Kaegi is the daughter of Thomas Kaegi of Lincoln and Keli Gail of Williamstown and is a graduate of Mount Greylock Regional School.
Aidan Losardo of Pittsfield and Sebastien Franck of Great Barrington have completed the two-year high school program at Bard Academy to matriculate into Bard College at Simon's Rock: The Early College in Great Barrington.
Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, graduated 473 students from 39 states and 42 countries on May 27, including two local students.
Rose May of Dalton graduated cum laude after majoring in biological chemistry. The daughter of Jeffrey H. May and of Kara L. Thornton, both of Dalton, is a 2014 graduate of Wahconah Regional High School.
Quintin Pollart of Great Barrington graduated after majoring in economics and minoring in philosophy. The son of John G. Pollart and Claire R. Naylor-Pollart of Great Barrington is a 2014 graduate of Berkshire School.
Kevin Fischer of Pittsfield and Pearl Sutter of Windsor were awarded bachelor of arts degrees during the spring commencement at Drew University in Madison, N.Y. The speakers at the ceremony included Tony Award-winning actor John Leguizamo and acclaimed alumna Mallory Mortillaro.
Keyonte Edwards of Cheektowaga, N.Y., graduated on May 19 from State University of New York at Buffalo with a bachelor's degree in psychology.
Bard College at Simon's Rock in Great Barrington graduated 140 students on Saturday, May 19, including the following local students. The speaker was White House reporter, CNN political analyst, and author April Ryan.
- Gabriel Albano of Egremont, associate of arts degree.
- Zoe Nadig of Lenox, associate of arts degree with distinction.
- Daniel Packer of Williamstown, summa cum laude, bachelor of arts degree in mathematics.
- Georges Pichard of Great Barrington, magna cum laude, bachelor of arts degree in premedical studies and theater arts.
- Mira Tesla of Great Barrington, magna cum laude, bachelor of arts degree in psychology and animal behavior.
Clarkson University awarded nearly 800 degrees to students from 34 states, 26 countries and 60 New York state counties, this spring including the following students:
- Michael Coelho of Pittsfield, bachelor of science degree in aeronautical engineering, mechanical engineering.
- Nicholas Dastoli of Pittsfield, bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering.
- Joseph Potvin of Dalton, doctor of philosophy degree in electrical and computer engineering.
- Curran Doyle of Dalton, bachelor of science degree in aeronautical engineering.
- Kevin Murray of West Stockbridge, bachelor of science degree in civil engineering, business minor, mathematics minor.
- Jake Kordana of Windsor, bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering.
Mary Mcgrath of Lenox graduated magna cum laude from State University of New York at Purchase with a bachelor of fine arts in dance on May 18.
The University of Rhode Island in Kingston held its 132nd Commencement on the weekend of May 19-20. Among the nearly 4,000 graduates were:
- David Michael Krok of Pittsfield, doctor of pharmacy
- Paige Nancy Lovellette of Pittsfield, doctor of pharmacy
- Kayla Wickham of Lenox, bachelor of science, kinesiology, magna cum laude
John Trimarchi graduated with a bachelor of arts in renewable energy and ecological design from Green Mountain College in Poultney, Vt.
Skylar Haddad of Pittsfield graduated in May from Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y., earning a bachelor of arts in journalism.
Academic Lists & Awards
Amaya Smith of Williamstown was named to the spring 2018 high honors list and Henry Eustis of Great Barrington to the honors list at Pomfret (Conn.) School, an independent college preparatory school.
The following first-year students have been selected for inclusion on the dean's list for academic achievement during the Spring 2018 semester at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y.: Alexandra M. Lynch of Lenox, who attended Westminster School, and Katherine M. Smith of Great Barrington, who attended the Hotchkiss School.
Two area students were honored at the annual honors convocation held at Carleton College in Northfield, Minn. At the end of every academic year, the Carleton community gathers to recognize faculty and students for their accomplishments and service.
♦ Emily Kaegi of Williamstown was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa honorary scholastic fraternity and received the Pat Lamb Award. The Carleton chapter of Phi Beta Kappa was established in 1913 and elects its membership from students who rank in the highest 15 percent of their graduating class and meet other prescribed criteria. The Pat Lamb Award, named for the college's first director of women's athletics, is given to outstanding senior female athletes who have achieved athletic excellence and a high level of academic achievement.
♦ Alice Curtin of Great Barrington received the Mike Ewers Award from the Minnesota Space Grant Consortium. Established in 2008 in memory of Colin Michael "Mike" Ewers, who drowned in the Tanama River near Puerto Rico in 2003 while on a research trip to the Arecibo Radio Observatory, the prize is awarded to junior or senior students involved in space-related research who best exemplify his vision for the exploration of space and his enthusiasm for public outreach.
Western New England University in Springfield congratulates the more than 400 students named to the spring 2018 president's list for achieving a grade-point average of 3.80 or higher and more than 700 to the dean's list for achieving at least a 3.3 GPA. Aaron W. Norton of West Stockbridge, a senior majoring in accounting, has been named to the president's list for the spring 2018 semester at the State University of New York at Oswego.
Bard College at Simon's Rock in Great Barrington has named the following students to the spring 2018 dean's list for their outstanding academic achievement. The following local students were recognized: Benjamin Bergman and Margot Douillet, both of Great Barrington; Zoe Nadig of Lenox; Evan Sylbert of Monterey, and Daniel Packer of Williamstown.
The following students have been named to the dean's list at the University of New Hampshire in Durham for the spring 2018 semester: highest honors: Devon Atwell of Becket and Ellen Ross, both of Dalton; honors: Lilian Pudlo and Connor Mathews, both of Dalton, Hailey Kirchner of Pittsfield and Kayla Goodwin of Williamstown.

Drew University in Madison, N.J., has named senior Pearl Sutter, majoring in neuroscience, and Robert Sutter, undecided, both of Windsor, to its dean's list for the spring 2018 semester.
Loyola University Maryland in Baltimore has named senior Daley Keator of Lenox and sophomore Maeve Shine of Williamstown to the spring 2018 dean's list.
Seton Hall University in South Orange, N.J., has named Austin O'Neill of Pittsfield to the 2018 spring dean's list.
