Williams Volleyball Sweeps Conn College

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Celia Adams recorded eight kills Saturday to lead the Williams College volleyball team to a three-set win over Connecticut College.
 
Lauren Kauppila passed out 26 assists and recorded 12 digs in the 25-15, 25-18, 25-16 win.
 
Williams (12-2, 6-2 NESCAC) hosts Babson on Friday.
 
Football
CLINTON, N.Y. -- Joel Nicholas ran for 79 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead Williams to a 35-7 win over Hamilton.
 
Bobby Maimaron threw for 169 yards and three TDs for Williams (5-0) goes to Bates on Saturday.
 
Women's Soccer
MANSFIELD, Conn. - Sam Phan scored her fourth goal of the season to help Williams defeat Eastern Connecticut State, 4-1.
 
Keyla Kamshad and Olivia Dabinett split time in goal for Williams (4-7-1), which hosts Farmingdale State on Sunday afternoon at Cole Field.
 
Men's Cross Country
NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Aidan Ryan ran 8 kilometers in a time of 23 minutes, 52.90 seconds to place first and lead Williams to a team victory at the Conn College Invitational.
 
Williams finished with 37 points to edge MIT (43 points).
 
Elias Lindgren placed third for Williams, which is off until the NESCAC Championships on Oct. 31.
 
Women's Cross Country
NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Genna Girard ran a 6K time of 21:31 to place second and pace Williams to a first-place finish at the Conn College Invitational.
 
Williams finished with 74 points to top runner-up MIT by 25 points. Williams goes back to Connecticut for the NESCAC Championships on Oct. 31.
 
Women's Golf
BLOOMFIELD, N.J. -- Tianyi Zhuang carded an even par 72 to lead Williams to first place after one day at the NYU Invitational at Forest Hill Field Club.
 
Williams heads into Sunday's final round at 296, 19 strokes ahead of second-place Wellesley.

Williamstown Charter Review Panel OKs Fix to Address 'Separation of Powers' Concern

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Charter Review Committee on Wednesday voted unanimously to endorse an amended version of the compliance provision it drafted to be added to the Town Charter.
 
The committee accepted language designed to meet concerns raised by the Planning Board about separation of powers under the charter.
 
The committee's original compliance language — Article 32 on the annual town meeting warrant — would have made the Select Board responsible for determining a remedy if any other town board or committee violated the charter.
 
The Planning Board objected to that notion, pointing out that it would give one elected body in town some authority over another.
 
On Wednesday, Charter Review Committee co-Chairs Andrew Hogeland and Jeffrey Johnson, both members of the Select Board, brought their colleagues amended language that, in essence, gives authority to enforce charter compliance by a board to its appointing authority.
 
For example, the Select Board would have authority to determine a remedy if, say, the Community Preservation Committee somehow violated the charter. And the voters, who elect the Planning Board, would have ultimate say if that body violates the charter.
 
In reality, the charter says very little about what town boards and committees — other than the Select Board — can or cannot do, and the powers of bodies like the Planning Board are regulated by state law.
