Battle of the Berkshires Tournament Continues in Pittsfield

PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- The Berkshire Force 16U travel softball team earned a 12-4 win over the Nor'Easters to wrap up pool play at the Battle of the Berkshires at the Doyle Complex.

Arianna Perkins went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and four RBIs to lead a 13-hit attack for the Force.

Lillian MacDonald was 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of doubles, and Ava MacMahon, Mackenzie Biros and Markiara Jackson each had a pair of hits.

Amelia Polidoro and McMahon split time in the circle in the five-inning win, combining to strike out eight and allow three earned runs.

The Force 16U squad took a pair of losses earlier in the day on Saturday: 11-2 to the Worcester Union Rose and 12-10 to the Charlton Wildfire.

Elsewhere in 16U play, the the Greylock Thunder Saturday beat the Demo, 17-2.

Avery Lane earned the win in the circle with a three-inning, complete-game effort.

Sydney Payson anchored the offense, going 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of RBIs.

Lydia Gaudreau, Evy Clairmont, and Lane each had a pair of hits in a 12-hit attack.

12U DIVISION

Two of the Berkshire County entrants in the season's first big travel tournament had big wins on Saturday.

The host Force amassed 11 hits, inlcuding Charlotte Kotski's home run in a 19-1 win over the Hurricanes.

Kotski went 3-for-3 with six runs batted in.

Emma Wixsom went 2-for-2 with an RBI, and Mila Ostellino and Lily Pierce each doubled.

Force pitchers Wixsom and Molly Potash combined to strike out nine and not allow an earned run in the win.

The Thunder's 14U team shut out the Miss Scotties of Ballston Spa, N.Y., 14-0. The Thunder collected four extra-base hits in an 11 hit-attack, and its pitcher struck out five in four innings in the circle.

The third local 12U squad competing this weekend, the Berkshire Storm, lost its Saturday game, 15-3, to the Bethlehem (N.Y.) Bombers.

The tournament concludes on Sunday with playoff games starting at 8 a.m. and finals scheduled for 3.h playoff games starting at 8 a.m. and finals scheduled for 3.

Two of 3 Hinsdale Officers Involved in Kauvil Shooting Won't Return

HINSDALE, Mass. — Seven months after being placed on leave only one officer involved in the fatal police shooting of 27-year-old Biagio Kauvil in January has returned to duty.

The Select Board accepted Police Chief Shawn Boyne's letter of intention to retire during Wednesday's board meeting.

"We've got a lot to do. We've got to build a department again, but we'll survive," board member Raymond Huntoon said in a follow-up.

Two of the three Select Board members were present, with Huntoon serving as chair because the chairman was absent.

Huntoon and Margaret Gregory both voted to accept Boyne's letter of intention to retire. The retirement will not be official until the Berkshire County Retirement Board sets an effective date, Huntoon said later.

The board did not read Boyne's retirement letter aloud during Wednesday's meeting and did not discuss the matter further. iBerkshires' request for the letter under public records was rejected with board members saying it contained medical information.

Despite the attention the situation has received online, the meeting was lightly attended, with about a dozen people in attendance.
