Letter: Neal Lies in His Mailings

Letter to the EditorPrint Story | Email Story

To the Editor:

How can this be? Both the Democrats and Republicans seem to be in strong mutual agreement that one's opinion of Donald Trump is the most important issue in this election.

I just received my fifth glossy attack ad by the Massachusetts Democrat Party (authorized by Richie Neal) against independent congressional candidate Nadia Milleron. These ads falsely try to portray Milleron as a puppet of Trump even though the vast majority of those who support her recognize our president for the lying, immoral demagogue that he is. Neal is clearly using fear tactics to distract from the real issues — his deplorable record of missed opportunities to help average and low income Americans, his accepting huge donations from corporations like the health insurance and pharmaceutical industries that sway his decisions, his support for reckless military spending and war, and his very rare visits to the Berkshires. Milleron's campaign is funded largely by small, grassroots individual donors, while Neal is funded mostly by corporate donors and the Democrat Party machine. His $3 million war chest allows him to flood us with misinformation like "She answers to the MAGA Elite."

Neal had been chair of the House Ways and Means and House Joint Committee on Taxation. He was in a powerful position to push for Medicare for All, which would have saved thousands of lives and billions of dollars, and failing to use power for the public good I find unforgivable. Milleron, on the other hand, boldly proposes replacing the parasitic health insurance companies with a trust that would pay for universal health care through fair taxation, eliminating premiums and co-pays.

Neal supported wasting our tax dollars by funding the militaries of Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan. Milleron proposes a major overhaul of the tax code to benefit struggling poor and middle class families earning less than $100,000 per year.

The Democrats discredit themselves by funding these absurd ads. They make no attempt to see why they are now rejected by so many like myself, who feel that being anti-Trump is not nearly enough. The Dems fail to take responsibility for the exporting of manufacturing jobs due to trade deals they promoted over the years. There is no accountability for their acceptance of corporate and PAC money that led to policy decisions that have impoverished so many American families.

It's been nearly three years since I Dem-exited, and I look forward to being represented by a legislator who actually cares about the pressing needs of ordinary people. Independent Nadia Milleron will actually represent the Berkshires by being accountable to citizens, rather than corporations or a corrupt party.

Pittsfield Man Pleads Guilty to 2025 Assault, Firearm Charges

Staff ReportsiBerkshires

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A city man is facing up to nine years in prison after pleading guilty to multiple assault and firearm charges from last year.

The Berkshire District Attorney's Office has reported that on Thursday, Oct. 15, Jarvis L. Chadwell Jr., 20, pleaded guilty to 10 charges and was sentenced to 7 to 9 years in state prison following an incident on Oct. 18, 2025.

Police say that he fired a gun multiple times in a vehicle over an argument, striking the car and nearby home.

"This incident was not just alarming because there was gun violence, but also because it occurred in such close proximity to a school. I will not waver on my stance towards gun violence in our community — gun violence must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," District Attorney Timothy Shugrue said.

"While I am committed to supporting those who need our help with recovery options and courts of hope, we must also protect our children and communities from the threat of violence that can claim lives in an instant. I commend the Pittsfield Police for their response and dedication to quickly solving this crime."

This occurred near Morningside Community School, which was retired at the end of the last academic year.

Charges:

  • armed assault with intent to murder
  • attempted assault & battery by discharging a firearm
  • witness intimidation
  • malicious destruction of property
  • resisting arrest
  • assault and battery on a police officer
  • illegal possession of a firearm
  • illegal possession of a large capacity feeding device
  • possession of ammunition without a firearm identification card
  • possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony

Probation conditions include a mental health evaluation and aftercare; sign any releases required by probation; and refrain from abuse of the named victim, including threats of violence.

Pittsfield Police responded to a ShotSpotter activation at 65 Cherry St. just before 1 a.m. on that day in 2025. Upon arrival, police say witnesses confirmed hearing a gunshot and observing a man fleeing the area.

"While outside the 65 Cherry Street residence, officers observed a vehicle parked near the neighboring residence with a bullet hole in the windshield and an additional bullet hole in the side of 67 Cherry Street. Based on witness descriptions at the scene, law enforcement was able to quickly locate the Defendant within 30 minutes of the incident," a press release from the DA reads.
