Mounties Proud of Effort in Loss to Lenox

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- It's never fun to lose, but it's a little easier to take when massive improvement is shown.

That's the feeling of Mount Greylock girls' soccer coach Tom Ostheimer, who saw his Mounties make big strides on defense against an undefeated Lenox squad on Saturday. Greylock lost 4-1 to the Millionaires nine days ago, falling behind 3-0 even before the end of the first half. The Mounties held firm on Saturday, however, holding Lenox scoreless midway through the second half until the Millionaires finally broke through for a 2-0 win on the road.

"I was proud of the way our defense held them scoreless for the first 53 minutes of the game," Ostheimer said. "It was a big improvement from nine days ago when we got down quick against Lenox."

Lenox (6-0) eventually found a way to beat Greylock keeper Margot Besnard in the 53rd minute. Besnard made 17 saves in the game, but she couldn't prevent Josie Marshall from heading in a cross from Jen Delasco 13 minutes into the second half. The Mounties (5-2-2) hung tough the rest of the game until Lyndsey Moran put the game away with a goal off of a pass from Marshall with three and half minutes left to play.

Junior stopper Alexa Adams also came in handy in slowing down the potent Millionaires' offense. Greylock next hosts Pittsfield at 4:15 p.m. on Monday.
