PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- Takeira Darrow and Lucy Shepard recorded 12 and 11 kills, respectively, as the Mount Greylock volleyball team topped Pittsfield in five sets to earn a berth in the Western Massachusetts tournament.

Darrow recorded a pair of aces for the Mounties, who prevailed by scores of 25-18, 25-20, 18-25, 15-25 and 15-12.

Emma Hayward had 14 digs and four kills, and Gabby Alvarez recorded 31 assists in the win.

"This is a crazy week with three big matches for us,” Mount Greylock coach Greg Geyer said. “Due to re-schedules this also will be our only match of the week with our full squad. We played the best we have all year in sets 1 and 2 and the team really came together prior to and during the fifth set. The captains showed great leadership tonight and we are really looking forward to playoffs."

Pittsfield’s Hannah Wheeler notched 37 digs to help extend numerous long rallies in the five-setter. Marie Butler had 10 kills, and Emma King had three for the Generals.

"Hannah Wheeler was not letting anything hit the floor for us tonight and PHS's two big servers [Adam Quinto and Marie Butler ] did their damage in the third and fourth sets,” Geyer said. “Many PHS players contributed and made us work for every point."

Pittsfield has a quick turnaround to play Southwick on Saturday.

Mount Greylock goes to Mount Everett on Wednesday.
