SHEFFIELD, Mass. – Maya Ocuna-Saunders scored 18 points Monday to lead the Renaissance girls basketball team to a 75-23 win over Mount Everett.

The Phoenix broke the game open with a 13-1 run in the first half to open a 26-7 lead.

“We're missing having that extra guard presence to help alleviate the pressure and when we force the ball too many times it can get pretty sloppy,” said Mount Everett coach Josh King, whose team committed 29 turnovers.

“Credit to all the girls for battling tonight and especially some of our younger players who stepped in tonight and played some solid minutes [Ava Goewey and Siofhan Fedell] and Meg Loring, who played hockey last year, has done a great job of contributing even though never playing basketball before.”

Emily Steuernagle scored eight points, and Makayla Carpenter had six for the Eagles.

Mount Everett (1-6) hosts Granby on Thursday.

“We'll practice the next two days and then look to host Granby which was a close game (30-26) at their place, so hopefully we can right the ship and get ourselves back to playing more fundamentally sound basketball,” King said.
