John J. Nolan, 84

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — John Joseph Nolan, 84, of 638 Ashland St. died Friday, April 19, 2013, at Williamstown Commons. Born in North Adams on May 21, 1928, son of John A. and Anne Merrigan Nolan, he attended local schools and graduated from the former St. Joseph's High School with the class of 1945. He also attended the Haverhill Trade School from 1963 to 1964. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. Mr. Nolan was last employed by the former Ames Department Store in North Adams, where he worked for many years. He was a communicant of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church and of the former St. Francis of Assisi Church, where he was an usher for 50 years. He was also a member of the Post 125 American Legion and 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Bishop Conaty Assembly. He enjoyed cooking and crossword puzzles and was a fan of the Boston Red Sox. He and his wife, the former Sally J. Les, were married on Nov. 3, 1956, in St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Adams and celebrated by his uncle, the Rev. Clement Merrigan, a La Salette Missionary. Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Patricia A. Jerwick and her husband, John, of Hagerstown, Md.; three sons, John J. Nolan and his wife, Susan, and Robert B. Nolan, all of North Adams, and William J. Nolan and his wife, Brenda, of Clarksburg; a sister, Sister Mary Ann Nolan, of the Sisters of St. Joseph at Mont Marie in Holyoke; eight grandchildren, Daniel Nolan and his wife, Kim, of Hoboken, N.J., Timothy Nolan of North Adams, Rebecca Nolan and Riley Nolan, both of Clarksburg, Jason Jerwick, Jonelle Jerwick, Mikaela Jerwick and Jillian Jerwick of Hagerstown; and a great-granddaughter, Jaida Chappell of Clarksburg, and cousins and nieces. Two sons predeceased him, Michael Christopher Nolan in 1968 and Joseph Edward Nolan in 1969, and his sister Sister Therese Nolan, SSJ, in 2006. FUNERAL NOTICE — A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Mr. Nolan will be celebrated Thursday, April 25, at 9 a.m. at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery. Calling hours will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital in care of Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, MA 01247.
