John "Jack" Haig Sr.

John “Jack” Douglas Haig, Sr. 91 of New Ashford, MA died at his home on Monday, November 28, 2022 surrounded by his loving family.

Jack was born in a small house on North Street in Williamstown on August 29, 1931, a son of John Baillie and Ruth (Crandall) Haig. He was raised in Williamstown and attended Williamstown High School. After school he worked for local farms including many years as herdsman at Cricket Creek Farm.

 He married his wife, the former Priscilla Love in 1949. They were married for 73 years and raised four children together. They moved to New Ashford in 1970, where Jack became active in local politics.

In 1970 he went to work for Ed Wood Plumbing, and later at Mativi Plumbing in North Adams. At forty-four years old, as a master plumber, he started his own business John D. Haig Plumbing and Heating. He also held the position of Plumbing Inspector for the Town of Williamstown for several years. At the age of eighty-four Jack retired from the town and turned his plumbing business over to his two grandsons, Walker and Brady Haig. He and Priscilla also had the school bus contract for the town of New Ashford for many years and drove generations of students.

 Jack was an active member of the Second Congregational Church in Williamstown, where he served as a trustee and deacon. He was also a member of the Williamstown Masons. and Priscilla were long time members of the Promenabors Square Dance Club.

Jack was elected to serve as a New Ashford selectman. He also served the town as a member of the Planning Board, Conservation Commission and as the town representative to the Northern Berkshire Solid Waste Management District.

 Jack is survived by his loving wife Priscilla and his four loving children: John “Pete” Haig, Jr. (Bonnie) of New Ashford, Deborah Haig (William Clark) of Port Charlotte, Fl, Sandra Derosia of Williamstown and Jamie Ott of Clarksburg. He also leaves six grandchildren; Sawyer, Walker, Brady and Mackenzie Haig and Libby and Elyse Derosia and eight great-grandchildren: Tanner, Ryder, Cooper, Ian, Phoebe, Gus, Gretel and Mikey. was predeceased by his two sons-in-law, Alfred Derosia and Dale Ott, as well his two brothers Thomas and Robert Haig.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A funeral for John Douglas Haig, Sr. will be celebrated on Saturday, December 3, 2022, at 10:30 A.M. at the Second Congregational Church in Williamstown, masks required. Memorial donations may be made to the Second Congregational Church, New Ashford Fire Department or to Hospice Care of the Berkshires in care of the Funeral Home. The entire Haig family is a local institution. Jack and Priscilla created a wonderful dynasty. Our family has enjoyed many different interactions with several of them, beginning with Jack, probably around 1972. It is with heavy hearts that deep sympathy goes out to them.
