Gertrude M. Snow

Gertrude M. Snow, 86, of Humphrey Street died Sunday at Berkshire Medical Center. She had been a resident of the Village at Laurel Lake in Lee. Born in Pittsfield on July 19, 1915, daughter of Clara Belle Paddock Porter, she grew up in Housatonic and attended schools there. Primarily a homemaker, she pressed laundry for various individuals and worked evenings at the Monument Mills in Housatonic. Mrs. Snow was a member of First Congregational Church. She enjoyed reading, and invited neighborhood children into her home, where she read classics books such as "Uncle Tom's Cabin" to them. She also took them to amusement parks, including Riverside Park in Agawam and the former Mountain Park in Holyoke. She enjoyed traveling and had visited Arizona, Oregon, California, Idaho, Texas and Canada. Her husband, Harvey William Snow, whom she married March 2, 1934, died Nov. 18, 1989. She leaves three daughters, Joyce E. Schram of Boise, Idaho, and Jean C. Snow of Pittsfield and Elaine A. Miller of Red Hook, N.Y.; three sons, Theodore H. Snow of Vancouver, Canada, Richard F. Snow of South Egremont and Bruce W. Snow of Caribou, Maine; a half-sister, Phyllis Carto of Prescott, Ariz.; a half-brother, Kenneth Porter of Tampa, Fla.; seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by a half-brother, Arthur Porter. Funeral services will be Friday, Feb. 22, at 1 p.m. at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME, conducted by the Rev. Charles Van Ausdall, pastor of First Congregational Church. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from noon until the time of the service.
