Mary Kelly Groat

Mary Kelly Groat, 76, of 339 Onota St. died yesterday morning at Springside of Pittsfield. Born in Pittsfield on Feb. 5, 1926, daughter of Thomas G. and Nora Hanley Kelly, she attended local schools. Mrs. Groat was employed with the former Sheaffer-Eaton Co. for many years until retiring in 1987. She was first employed by the former Liggett's Drug Store on North Street and as a secretary at GE during World War II. She was a communicant of St. Mark's Church and a member of its Rosary Sodality. She also was a member of the Pittsfield Fire Department Women's Auxiliary and Catholic Daughters of America. She enjoyed doing ceramics. Her husband, Willis H. "Bus" Groat, whom she married June 1, 1946, died March 25, 1987. She leaves two daughters, Carol A. Cohen and Pamela J. Brown, both of Pittsfield; two sisters, Noreen Doner and Ann Watroba, both of Pittsfield, and four grandchildren. Her grandson, Scott A. Cohen, predeceased her on May 31, 2000. Calling hours will be held Sunday from 4 to 7 at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME. Funeral services will be held Monday at 8:45 at the funeral home, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9:30 at St. Mark's Church; burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, donations may be made to Elder Services in care of the funeral home.
