Ray D. Cowell

Ray D. Cowell, 84, of 168 Tolland Road died Sunday at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield. He served as a selectman from 1974 to 1980. Born in East Otis on Jan. 5, 1918, son of Robert and Mary Dearing Cowell, he was educated in Otis schools and was a graduate of Lee High School. He served in the Army during World War II from 1942 until 1946. After his military service, he owned and operated a lumber business until 1960. In 1960, he opened Camp Overflow, which he operated until retiring in 1988. Mr. Cowell was a member of the town recreation commission from 1980 until 1983. He leaves his wife, the former Beatrice M. Sherwood, whom he married Nov. 8, 1952; two daughters, Gloria J. O'Brien of Lenox Dale and Marlene M. Libardi of Becket; two brothers, Clarence Cowell of Pittsfield and Leon Cowell of Lake Wales, Fla.; a sister, Dorothy Carrington of East Otis; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Friday from 5 to 7 at KELLY FUNERAL HOME in Lee. A private graveside service will be held in the spring at Otis Cemetery. Friends wishing may make donations to the Lee Regional Visiting Nurses Association in care of the funeral home.
