Alexis Moka

Alexis Moka, 78, of 4668 Cates Avenue, Jacksonville, Fla., a native of Pittsfield, died Monday at Memorial Medical Center in Jacksonville. Born in Pittsfield on Nov. 16, 1923, son of Stephen and Francina Moka, he attended local schools, including Pittsfield High School. Mr. Moka enlisted in the Navy on March 18, 1941. He attained the rank of senior chief petty officer during World War II and participated in the North African Campaign while aboard the USS Suwanee. He also served in the invasion of the Philippine Islands and Rennell Island. He received the Purple Heart for injuries sustained during the invasion, and several other medals and awards. He retired from the Navy on Aug. 1, 1967, and joined the Civil Service. He worked at the Naval Air Rework Facility in Jacksonville until his retirement on Jan. 6, 1986. Mr. Moka was a member of FRA Branch 126 and a plank owner in the U.S. Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C. He leaves his wife of 55 years, Mary Y. Moka, and a daughter, Karen R. Moka of Jacksonville. He was predeceased by a son, Alex "Lex" Moka, on March 7, 1985. Funeral services with full military honors will be held Friday, March 1, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of JACKSONVILLE MEMORY GARDENS FUNERAL HOME, 111 Blanding Boulevard, Orange Park, Fla. The family invites friends to visit at the funeral home on Wednesday and Thursday evening from 6 until 8 p.m.
