Marie T. Wells

Marie T. Wells, 84, formerly of Sheffield, died Sunday at the home of her daughter, Antronet J. Clukey of Enfield, Maine. Born in Kinderhook, N.Y., on Aug. 20, 1917, daughter of William and Anna Marie Eberle Tompkins, she attended schools in Ghent and Hudson, N.Y., and the former Searles High School in Great Barrington. She had been a resident of Sheffield for more than 60 years before moving to Maine in October to live with her daughter. Mrs. Wells was employed as a bus driver for the Southern Berkshire Regional School System for 20 years, until retiring in 1987. She was a member of the AARP, the Thursday Morning Club, the Sheffield Council on Aging, the Sheffield Friendly Union and the former Cincinnatus Chapter 146 Order of Eastern Star in Great Barrington. She also was a member of Wisdom Chapter 130, Order of Eastern Star, in West Stockbridge. Her husband, Leonard S. Wells, whom she married Sept. 6, 1937, died in 1969. Besides her daughter, she leaves three sons, David S. Wells and Raymond A. Wells, both of Sheffield, and Allen L. Wells of Brooks-ville, Fla.; two daughters, Shirley A. Baldwin of New Port Richey, Fla., and Loraine M. Fisher of Hudson, N.H.; a sister, Janet Sigsworth of Great Barrington; 20 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren. A son, Jack S. Wells, died in 1990. A son, Jack S. Wells, died in 1990, and a great-great-grandson, Sesar Pacheco, died in 2000. The funeral will be Thursday, March 7, at 11 from FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME, with the Rev. Ed Eastman officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday, March 6, from 4 until 7. Members of Wisdom Chapter 130 OES will present a funeral service for their sister at 7 p.m. Donations may be made to the Massachusetts Cancer Society in care of the funeral home, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.
