Robert P. Herrmann, 81

SAVOY, Mass. —

Mr. Robert P. Herrmann, 81, of Savoy, died Tuesday afternoon, January 13, 2026 at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield.

He was born in Adams on June 23, 1944, a son of the late Paul K. and Florence M. (Chamberlain) Herrmann. He attended Adams schools, graduating from the former Adams Memorial High School with the Class of 1962. He served with the Massachusetts Army National Guard from 1965 until 1971. He had lived in Savoy for the past 55 years.

A machinist by trade, Bob was the owner and operator of H & R Machine Inc. in Adams from 1967 until his passing, working until the day before his passing. In collaboration with C.H. McCann Technical Vocational High School, he would provide hands-on training at his shop to apprentices in machine technology, preparing them to enter the workforce. Earlier, he had worked at the former E.D. Jones Machine Corp. in Dalton, becoming an instructor for new employees before leaving to start his own business.

Bob was a Savoy firefighter for 24 years and served as Fire Chief for 19 years until retiring. Even after his official retirement he continued to mentor young firefighters for many years. He also served as the Civil Defense, and later, Emergency Management Coordinator for the town, and had also served two terms on the Board of Selectmen. He had also served on the Board of Directors of the former Adams Ambulance Service.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed all outdoor activities. He was a member of the Hoosac Valley Motorcycle Club for many years, as well as the Adams Outdoorsmen for Youth.

Bob is survived by his wife of nearly 55 years, the former Mary Ann Salamon, whom he married on March 6, 1971; his son, Timothy J. Herrmann of Adams, his daughter Alicia S. Herrmann of Troy, NY; his sister Margaret A. Rotti of Pittsfield; two grandchildren, Isaac and Rachael, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Kurt F. Herrmann, a sister-in-law, Beatrice Herrmann, and his brother-in-law Lawrence J. Rotti.

A celebration of Bob’s life will be held on a date to be announced in the Spring. There are no calling hours. Memorial donations may be made to the Savoy Volunteer Fire Dept., 17 Center Rd.
