Josephine P. Benz

Josephine P. Benz, 91, of 176 Columbus Ave. died yesterday at Berkshire Medical Center following a short illness. Born in Pittsfield on Jan. 26, 1911, daughter of Giacomo and Albina Pia Pia, she attended local schools. Mrs. Benz was a homemaker. An active member of Zion's Evangelical Luthern Church, she was a member of the church's Altar Guild, a charter member of the Puppet Sewers, a group that made puppets for the children's ward of local hospitals, and a member of the church women's circle. Her husband, Charles H. Benz Sr., whom she married April 22, 1928, died in 1969. She leaves a son, Charles H. Benz Jr. of Walnut Creek, Calif.; a daughter, Virginia B. Dillon of Pittsfield; a sister, Virginia P. Perrone of Pittsfield; eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. A great-grandson, Conor Dillon, died in 2000. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 11 in Zion's Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Rev. Peter D. Boehringer officiating. Burial will be in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours will be at WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 220 East St., Pittsfield, on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Zion's Evangelical Lutheran Church Memorial Fund in Mrs. Benz's memory.
