E. Margery Sobon

E. Margery Sobon, 79, of 3 Kerr Ave. died Monday at Berkshire Place in Pittsfield. Born in Adams on Aug. 10, 1922, daughter of Roy F. and Ethel Taylor Carpenter, she graduated from the former Adams High School in 1940. She also attended the former Bliss Business School in North Adams. Mrs. Sobon had worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on the Flood Control Projects in Adams and North Adams. During World War II and the Korean War, she had worked for the U.S. Selective Service System. She was most recently employed as an inventory management specialist for the U.S. Naval Plant representative office in Pittsfield, retiring in 1984. She was a member of First Congregational Church of Adams and sang in its choir for more than 60 years. She also was a member of the Adams Art Association, the Adams Senior Citizens and the Merry Dollers Club in Pittsfield. She enjoyed china painting and gardening, and was an avid doll collector. She leaves two daughters, Elizabeth J. DiPalazzo of Pittsfield and Joan P. Bassette of Savoy; a son, Jack A. Sobon of Windsor; two brothers, Roger T. Carpenter of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Richard A. Carpenter, who is serving abroad with the U.S. State Department; a sister, Barbara Cady of Sun Lakes, Ariz., and five grandchildren. The funeral will be held Thursday at 10:15 a.m. from AUGE-PACIOREK-SIMMONS FUNERAL HOME, 13 Hoosac St., Adams, followed by services at 11 a.m. in First Congregational Church, 42 Park St., Route 8, Adams. The Rev. John T. Carrick, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Bellevue Cemetery, Adams. Calling hours are Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to First Congregational Church through the funeral home.
