Norman S. Hirschl

Norman S. Hirschl, 86, of 5 Deer Hill Road died Tuesday afternoon at Sweetwood in Williamstown. Born in New York on June 22, 1915, son of Abraham and Ernestine Lyons Hirschl, he attended schools there and graduated from Jamaica High School. He also attended the City College of New York, where he was the first editor of the freshman newspaper in 1932. He also wrote music and book for the senior class play. He served in the Army during World War II in the Philippines in 1944. An art dealer since the 1930s, he worked for the Frederick Frazier Gallery, and in 1940 became the manager of the John Levy Gallery. He founded Hirschl & Adler Galleries in 1952, and at the time of his death was chairman emeritus. He was past president of the Art Dealers Association and served on the Council of Chesterwood, where he established the artist-in-residence program. He also served on the board for the Center for the Study of the Presidency and was an adviser to the James MacGregor Burns Academy of Leadership at the University of Maryland. He taught in the winter study program at Williams College. His wife, the former Barbara M. Broad, whom he married Oct. 16, 1938, died Feb. 12, 2002. He leaves a daughter, Elaine Ellis of New York City; four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. His son, Roger N. Hirschl, died in 1967. Burial services will be private. A memorial service is planned for Sunday, April 7, at 6 p.m. at Frank E. Campbell Funeral Home on Madison Avenue and 81st St., New York City, with a reception following at Hirschl & Adler Galleries 21 East 70th St., New York City.
